These are some recent drawings I did for some school readers for Macmillan. For these briefs I often don't get the accompanying story, just a basic description for each drawing, so it's interesting to imagine what the context is behind each artwork.

Comic book panels
These are 2 comic book style drawings I pitched for a web development company who were in the process of developing a game for a big client. They wanted something like this for a comic style intro into the game.
I wasn't given very much time, or even the full storyline, just the script for these first 2 panels and a basic outline of what was happening (it had something to do with cyber-crime, hence the iPad). Despite this, I was pretty pleased with what I achieved with these, specifically with the lighting and dynamics in the panels.
Panel 1 was supposed to be looking down an alleyway, but I really wanted to try an aerial view, as more of an establishing shot to give a sense of space around the character. Unfortunately the job didn't go through due to budget issues, but I would have loved to have worked on some more of these style of drawings.

Doodle Sketches "You like dergs?"
Some doodles I did last night while watching TV. Done with ballpoint pen (which is why it came out a bit scratchy)

What would Nandos and Santam do?
Whenever something stupid happens in this country, like the ridiculous uproar about a painting, I like to remind myself of the awesome spirit and goodwill of the Nandos and Santam ad campaigns, and it restores my faith in humanity again. Why fight over something petty when you can work together for something positive?
Have a nice day!

ALL CHAIRS ARE EVIL!
I read this article the other day which served to reinforce what I've been thinking for a while now... ALL CHAIRS ARE EVIL! As someone who has been struggling with back problems for about a year and a half now, as a result of having to sit for up to 18 hours a day (if not longer), I know the damage that they can do. Here's the article: http://jacobinmag.com/spring-2012/against-chairs/ Now go for a walk!

After my Rugby World Cup calendars did so well last year, I felt like making some new ones for the Super 15 competition happening now. They've been up on my site www.wallaceillustrations.co.za for download since the beginning of the tournament, so if you haven't seen them yet I encourage you to go have a look :)
The players I chose are some of my favourite players from each South African team (apologies to New Zealand and Aussie teams, but I ran out of time to include everyone!)
Here's Lwazi Mvovo from the Sharks. (Sorry Lwazi, I didn't know you'd changed your hair before this)
One of my favourite players ever, Gio Aplon from the Stormers.
Josh Strauss, from the Lions. I picked Josh partly cos I like him as a player and partly cos his beard gives him so much character to draw.
Chilliboy Ralepelle from the Bulls. Partly chosen as one of my favourite players, and partly because of my bias from us going to the same school, haha. Again, sorry Chilli, you've also got more hair than shown below.
This guy is a monster on the field, Ashley Johnson from the Cheetahs, so much character in that fro too!

Warmup sketch: Hiccups
Morning all!
This morning I woke up with hiccups! This is a decidedly cruel way to start a Monday morning, I thought. Each hiccup consumed my entire being, and so when it came time to decide on a subject for a warm-up sketch, it's really all I could think about. So here you go.
I'm gonna try and do the warm-up sketch thing as often as i can this year, so keep an eye out for more to come.
Have a nice day!

2012.. And we're back!
Hello!
It's been ages, how have you been!? So finally, after a couple of MONTHS, I'm back on the blog. Why was I gone for so long? Well for the past couple of months there were just 2 things that I couldn't seem to get at the same time, those were (1) time and (2) an internet connection!
December and January have been hugely busy work wise and I can only hope things keep going so well. I'll be sharing some of the things I've been busy with as soon as I get myself sorted so you'll be able to see what's been keeping me so wrapped up. A hint, there were puppy drawings, many many puppy drawings!
I've got big plans for this year. It's a new start for me in so many ways. After a really rough year last year, I'm determined to make this one something special. This means, amongst other things, lots of blogging and sketching. My other plans I'm going to have to keep secret for now though.
It is with this that I bring you my first sketch of the year, setting the tone, I think, for 2012 and things to come.
Many thanks
Stephen Wallace
